What program is best for large inventory?

I Have a large collection to inventory. There are many categories and
subcategories.
I would like to have a main index that takes me to the individual categories
index. Then click on subcategories and from there a picture or word that
takes me to the individual item information.
I have tried several applications but have not found one that looks or has
the features I want. Someone suggest a web page set up might be what I need.
I don't know. I am not very computer savvy but I am learning as I go.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
