Sorry, I found the fix a long time ago, in the MS KBs. Seem it was for Word 2002, but I found it worked for 2003 also, and used it 3 or 4 months ago to fix my installation. I didn't analyze it to see how it worked, as it was only a minor edit in the file type handler. it was worth a shot. It worked, that's all I know.

I'm not sure if that's the best solution for this specific situation. Part of the purpose of DDE is to use the same instance of the application for multiple files. When you turn if off then another instance of the application will start. Since the OP is encountering a delay if the application isn't already running, forcing another instance of the application to start when opening a file outside the application may ultimately cause even more of a delay.
Now, I can't say for sure, since I have no way to test this - all of my files open without a delay, so I'm basing this on logic only. :-)

Here is a fix I have used before to fix this issue
In Windows Explorer, click Tools Folder Options, File Types. For Word documents highlight .doc extension and then click Advanced. Click Open on the list, and then click Edit. replace /DDE with "%1" (use quotes) to the end of the "Application used" box. And uncheck the DDE box. Now test. If all is well, do the same for the Excel (.xls)

All my Microsoft Office 2003 applications load/open [launch] slow all the time, except it is much faster when I have a similar application already open. I use only a local drive. "Bob I" wrote:
Sorry, try telling us about the problem. When do documents open slow? Is the application already open? Only when you double-click them in Windows Explorer? Files on a network or local or both or only attachment? All Office applications or just Word?

It seems to take forever to load/open my Microsoft Office 2003 documents??? I remember when I had Office 2000 there was 'Microsoft Office' in my STARTUP Folder, did this help load/open my Office documents faster? Is this option no longer available in Microsoft Office 2003 ? If it is still available in Microsoft Office 2003, how do I activate it or get it into my STARTUP Folder?
