I had the same problem on a new HP laptop with Vista Business and a
whole bunch of HP bloatware loaded, including Norton Antivirus. There
is much said on the web how Norton can causeslowloading of Word andExcelfiles. Since I have another antivirus program I use, I turned
off Norton in msconfig. Still painfullyslowOffice loads. I totally
uninstalled Norton, and now Office aps loads like they should. I'm
not sure what was happening, but I'm guessing opening an Office ap
must have somehow caused Norton to load, or at least tried to load
Norton. Get rid of Norton Antivirus and get something else that plays
well with MS Office.

Uninstalling Norton may have solved your problem, but it is not *the*
reason why Office 2007 is slow. I also have a HP laptop with Vista
Business, and Office 2007 ran painfully slow on this machine (2.0Ghz,
2GB RAM). I tried everything (uninstalled Norton as a matter of
course, even before I noticed the probolems), fiddled with file
command lines, fiddled with DDE settings, and it is still slow. I
eventually gave up and went back to Office 2003, I still think that
2007 is better but I just can't accept such slow operation on a
relatively powerful PC. This is some sort of a bug, or
msiconfiguration, which needs to be addressed. Opening attachments
from Outlook took up to 2 minutes sometimes, which is ridiculous.
