Re: converter tool to convert from office 2007 to previous version

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

I appreciate that.

The last thing I'm going to attempt is to download the office 2007 trial on
an old laptop, save the files as XL 03 and go on from there. A project for
this weekend.

Well, I may have spoken too soon. Some of the files convert, and some
fail
to convert. The ones that convert seem to be the ones whose formatting is
compatible with XL 03. The ones that fail are the ones whose formatting
is
not compatible with XL 03 (i.e., spreadsheets that take advantage of XL
07's
enhanced conditional formatting, etc.)

So, I'm not sure what the use of this conversion software is. Clearly not
ready for prime time. Seems to me if a spreadsheet has formatting that is
not compatible with XL 03 the software should just strip it out and return
the data/formulas.

Wow. That's great news.

I might try tomorrow to figure out if there is a critical one that does
the
trick. :-)

Thanks so much for sticking with it and for posting back!

Well, I just finished this process...and it works!

So there's the answer: in order for the converter to work, ALL security
updates need to be installed in office 2003. MSFT's web site doesn't
make
this clear, but there's the answer for anyone who's trying to make the
converter work.

The reason I am doing the reinstall is because I neglected to
download
all
the Office 2003 security updates before downloading the converter
tool.
The
web page you gave me in your prior response indicated that all
security
installs for XL 03 (and PPT 03) had to be installed prior to using
the
converter utility.

Before you go to all that trouble, try installing the compat pack
again.
It
should show up in add/remove programs. It's listed as Compatibility
Pack
for
the 2007 Office system

I just tried it here, and I can't open any 2007 PowerPoint or Excel
files.
(I get the same error you do in Excel. It's a different error in
PPT,
but
the cause is the same, I'm sure.) So the problem may not be on your
end.
Lemme see if I can find anything out.

I'm pretty sure that's what I downloaded.

I don't see the converter tool in the Add/Remove programs window.

What I'm going to do in uninstall Office 2003, reboot, reinstall
it,
download the updates, install them, and then download and
reinstall
the
converter tool and see where that gets me.

That's a good question, and I'm not sure I know the real answer.
So
what
I'd
do is go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the converter you
have
now,
reboot, and download and install this one just to make sure.

Well the files in question were created with XL 2007 RTM. As
far
as
I'm
aware I downloaded the RTM converter. But I'm not sure. How
do
I
tell?

Are you sure you have the RTM converter (compatibility pack),
then?

There was a beta compatibility pack, and then there was an
RTM
compatibility
pack. The beta one will work with beta files, and the RTM one
will
work
with
RTM files, but you can't mix and match the RTM and beta files
and
compatibility packs.

I believe the version of XL 07 was RTM.

When I try to open the documents in XL 03, XL tells me:

"This file is not in a recognizable format.
"If you know the file is from another program which is
incompatible
with
MS
Excel, click Cancel, then open this file in its original
application.
If
you
want to open the file later in MS Excel save it in a format
that
is
compatible, such as text format.
"If you suspect the file is damaged, click Help for more
information
about
solving this problem.
"If you still want to see what text is contained in the
file
click
Ok."

So, clearly the converter isn't working.

I downloaded the converter tool and installed it but
still
get
error
messages
when I try to open XL 07 documents in XL 03.

How do I convert these files?
