upgrades '04:student vs standard?

hi,im getting different info on whether the student version is
upgradeable. some say yes, others no, only updateable within a version
ie 11.1-11.9 not ver 12.0.

if stud ver not upgradeable isnt better to buy standard version to b
able to upgrade? or is the cost to upgrade the standaed version more
than the cost of just buying the new student version? in CANADA
standard approx $500, stud $200 if just bought student again , i'd
still b ahead 100$ even if standard update is free?

im wondering if i should exchange student for standard before i install
it.
