also you mentioned (elsewhere i believe it was) you ran a PC with both 2003
and 2007 full versions, i tried that as well and the update site only
recognized the 2003 installation when checking for updates.

the worst part of this whole ordeal was when i tried to uninstall 2007 i got
an error about some file was missing and i didn't have administrator rights
to the registry (which i most certainly do) and it 'rolled back' the
installation but then any time i opened IE7 i got an 'updating' box that
again came up with that same error finding a file and that i didn't have
administrator privileges. i spent the better part of yesterday installing
and uninstalling both versions of office trying to fix this and ended up
formatting the dang harddrive and loading everything all over
again......three times !!! trying to solve this screwed up issue.

the total size of the proofing installation from 2000 is 25 meg, there
should be some simple download fix that doesn't require the installation of
the older version to get an English spell checking option.

everything works fine now with the 2000 version proofing installed but
again, i shouldn't have to fall back to an older version for it to work. if
I'd not owned previous versions the spell checking portion of OE wouldn't
work unless i wanted to use French, which unfortunately i do not.
I hear you, but there is nothing I can do about it :(

What do you mean with an authentication failure? When do you get the
message and what exactly does it say?

the only fix i have that works is to go all the way back to Office 2000
premium and install the proofing portions of it then all checks out fine.
without a doubt nobody who paid the price we did for 2007 should have to fall
back on a 7 yrs old version of the software for a basic feature that SHOULD
be included with the newest version. a bit ridiculous if i do say so myself.

* Office 2007 is replacing the v.3 English Proofing Tools that
shipped in prior versions of Office with a new version (v.6). There are
a number of changes in this new version, but the one that is causing
this problem is that Outlook Express doesn't understand the new English
Proofing Tools. This is a problem because Outlook Express has never
shipped with its own proofing tools but has used the ones shipped by
Office.
* There are a few scenarios in which you won't run into this
problem:
o An upgrade from Office 2003 or earlier to Office 2007 RTM if
you don't manually uninstall the earlier version of Office.
o A configuration in which Office 2003 (or earlier) has not
been removed.
For example, I have Office 2003 still on both of my
computers, and I still have English in Outlook Express.
* The workaround for this problem is to install the English
dictionary from Office 2003 (or Office XP). There should be no need to
install all of Office just the dictionary. The English Proofing Tools
can be found in the Custom Install tree under 'Office Shared
Features|Proofing Tools|English'.

I'm so glad! I just posted this over in the OE group:

So, I had Office 2007 Beta 2 Technical Refresh installed, and all was
well: OE6 (XP SP2) saw Office's U.S. English proofing tools just fine.

I uninstalled the beta and installed Office 2007 final.

Since that time, the only language listed in OE is French, and indeed,
those are the only words it knows now.

I've confirmed that the U.S. English proofing tools are installed and that
(as expected) they're the default in Word, where, BTW, English
spell-checking works fine.

So...is there perhaps a Registry entry I can check that tells OE where to
look for the proofing tools, or perhaps the languages?

Note that OE is not displaying any error when spell-checking, it just
obliviously thinks I'm French now and has that as the only choice of
language in Tools/Options/Spelling.

Oops! I neglected to add that my case is the same as yours.
Office 2007 works fine. It's Outlook Express that's stuck
in French mode.
