Re: Excel - Office SP2

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

Hi DatabaseBen,

Although I checked out some of your suggestions (for example, msconfig, in
which I could not find any reference to the Adobe Download Manager) I did not
try any of the more drastic ones.

I found that DLM was in my start up menu as a short cut. When I deleted this
to the Recycle Bin, I still had the same problem with opening Excel, so I
restored the the short cut.

After this, the problem had disappeared. I have no idea why, but all my
Excel files now open normally.

Many thanks for your patience in trying to help me - your advice certainly
was responsible for my stumbling on the solution by accident.

Regards,

Walter

i think i have some other tips for you.

however, please keep in mind that the updates
recently provided by ms are patches to
fix holes in programs that compromises
security.

It could be likely the d.l. mgr may had incorporated
a certain file type/class. Then the
update for the office, took that
file back, thus the error you get
with the d.l.

But this is only
speculation, since i am not
priviledge nor i am a member
of the microsoft research and
development team.

So the question remains as to
what/why has the d.l. encountered
an error (your question).

The method that is best is
to uninstall the d.l. mgr, delete the
folder, reboot, and then reinstall it
again. Also, since it puts an auto
startup in msconfig. It might
help to remove it and start the
d.l. mgr manually and when you
need it to run.

If the error doesn't clear up. Then
the alternative would be to unistall
the updates via add/remove programs or
unistall the d.l. mgr and use another or
analyze the processes in real time and
figure out where the problem is.

Download a process explorer and set
it to set/stay on top and run your computer
as you would normaly do. In the process
explorer you will see which process is
causing the conflict. If you cannot resolve
the issue, then there isn't really much more
i can provide; as the issue would likely be
for adobe to resolve and not microsoft.

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/default.mspx

look for anything you like, but for the above
i recommend the process explorer download.

Hi DatabaseBen,

Thank you for your advice. However, it does not fit, because when I
checked
my system I found that the download manager has been sitting in my system
for
a while. This problem arose only after I downloaded a whole bunch of
updates
for Office SP2.

Do you have any other suggestions?

Regards,

Walter

that download manager got installed
on mine when i downloaded another
program frm adobe. but it is useless
so i uninstalled it.

you might want to consider the same.

if not, then there is an entry for it
in msconfig.

if not, then unistall it then repair your
excel, then reinstall that downloader
if you really think you need it...

I have just downloaded and installed SP2 for Office Standard. Before
this
instal, when I opened any Excel file it just opened. Since the instal,
I
first get a page called "Adobe Download Manager Log", a file tab "ADOBE
DLM"
and a warning "Unable to read file". When I click on OK inside the
warning
window, there is a slight pause when first about half of the warnign
window
disappears; then the other half disappears and my file opens.

This also happens if I want to start a new Excel sheet by clicking on
it
in
MS Office.

How can I reset my system so that this Adobe file does not open and it
operates normally?

Many thanks
