Re: Reading Layout Still a Problem

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

If you're able to exit Word and restart a number of times and the
option changes then I'd say it's not due to a locked Registry since
apparently it does update.

What I'm now wondering is if you have an add-in that is modifying your
preferences. It's not uncommon for a third-party to create an add-in
in which the creator may want to modify a single option but then uses
the Macro Recorder to record the change. Unfortunately, if they don't
know what they are doing they end up recording every option that was
turned on/off at the time they recorded the macro. In this case you
end up inheriting all of their personal preferences.

Go to Tools/Templates and Add-ins. Do you have any items in the Global
Templates list? If so, what are they?

I've tried both Bob's and Beth's suggestions. It takes opening and
closing Word a number of times, but the checkmark does eventually
return.

I don't know if my registry has been locked. How can I check this?
(I haven't rebooted since closing everything except Word, unchecking
the option, then opening and closing Word about 6 times. It remained
unchecked 4 or 5 times and then was checked again.)

The option for "Allow Reading Layout" is stored in the Registry and
it
is updated each time Word closes. With that in mind, what you need
to
do first is make sure only Word is running when you modify the
option - especially if you are using Word as your email editor in
Outlook:

- Exit all applications except Word
- In Word go to Tools/Options/General and turn off "Allow Reading
Layout"
- Exit Word
- Start Word again and verify the setting.

If the option has been turned back on then do you know if your
Registry been locked or if it is reset each time you restart the
computer?

I'm starting a new thread because the old one was from July
through
September. I'm using Office 2003 with Windows XP SP2 and whenever
I
open an Outlook
attachment, which opens in Word, I get the Reading Layout, which I
really dislike. I have unchecked "Open in Reading Layout" in both
Outlook and in Word itself, but the checkmark keeps coming back.
I've rebooted numerous times. Your advice here was to update
Office.
It took awhile because I couldn't get a successful download of the
latest service pack installed and had to wait to have IT do it,
but
everything's up to date now, yet the problem persists. Any advice?
