Windows Defender is NOT an anti-virus program. You should not just rely on it solely. If you end up having to remove NAV, download and install AVG (without the email certification feature as that has issues with Outlook 2007).
I'd simply ask Symantec for help in disabling the add-in. Don't tell them it's an issue with Office 2007, but rather that you just don't want the Office plugin working.

Patrick - thanks for the advice. I searched for "officeav.dll" using Desktop
Search and found no file by that name. I have gone into Control Panel and
it's options for modifying the program were related to whether I wanted to
set up separate accounts with different levels of protection re: parental
controls, internet access, etc. I have not rebooted since choosing not to
modify this feature, but will do so now and see if I can get Office to stop
scanning every document.
I have tried on-line chat with Symantic's support staff three times now and
they seem to be clueless about the problem, much less about a work-around.
The last time they said to try back later when the staff person in India who
works compatability might be available.
Is the only other option to simply remove Norton entirely and rely upon
Windows Defender instead?
Linc
p.s. thanks for your patience
