RE: Major Problelm with Beta Technical Refresh

Patrick - Just thought you might like to know the ultimate resolution. I was
able to use Control Panel to remove Norton Security Center entirely and then
installed AVG in its place. Everything now works, but it sure seems a pain
to have to entirely remove Norton to get Office to open up its documents. I
will send an e-mail to Symantic letting them know I had to abandon their
program because it was incompatible.

Thanks for your help and I trust you will pass along this feedback within
Microsoft. Overall, Office 2007 is great.

Windows Defender is NOT an anti-virus program. You should not just rely
on it solely. If you end up having to remove NAV, download and install
AVG (without the email certification feature as that has issues with
Outlook 2007).
I'd simply ask Symantec for help in disabling the add-in. Don't tell
them it's an issue with Office 2007, but rather that you just don't want
the Office plugin working.

Patrick - thanks for the advice. I searched for "officeav.dll" using Desktop
Search and found no file by that name. I have gone into Control Panel and
it's options for modifying the program were related to whether I wanted to
set up separate accounts with different levels of protection re: parental
controls, internet access, etc. I have not rebooted since choosing not to
modify this feature, but will do so now and see if I can get Office to stop
scanning every document.

I have tried on-line chat with Symantic's support staff three times now and
they seem to be clueless about the problem, much less about a work-around.
The last time they said to try back later when the staff person in India who
works compatability might be available.

Is the only other option to simply remove Norton entirely and rely upon
Windows Defender instead?

p.s. thanks for your patience

Do you get anywhere with Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, Change
Norton Anti-Virus 2006? Is there any option to remove Office
plugins/addins?
I don't have NAV 2006, so I can't check this here.
You might be able to do something manually about this:
Search for officeav.dll and if found go to Start/Run and run the
following command:

regsvr32 /u "c:\program files\norton antivirus\officeav.dll"
I have no idea whether NAV will not just revert this once you reboot
your computer though.

Patrick - that knowledge base article does not reference how to disable
automatic scanning in Norton Anti-Virus 2006. None of what you have
suggested works on that version. I have gone into the control panel of
Norton Protection Center and turned off Auto-Protect and made sure that the
box for re-starting Auto Protect at start-up is disabled. Even with this,
once I reboot the computer it still restores the Auto Protect and every
existing document when I try to open it is error messaged as being
unavailable as soon as Word or Excel tries to scan for viruses. If I simply
disable Auto-Protect and don't reboot, I get the same result.

Is there some other feature on my Fujitsu LIfeBook T4210 that would be
telling Office to use the plug in for Norton every time Office opens? This
is very frustrating and probably means I need to remove Norton from my
computer entirely or abandon using Office 2007.

Hi, this is Lincoln and I am having a similar problem that seems to be a
result of the anti-virus program (Norton 2006 Anti-Virus) on my computer
being incompatible with the technical refresh version of the Beta. If you
look at the error message that pops up and go to the MIcrosoft Knowledge Base
article 835404 it gives instructions on how to disable the Norton plug-in,
but for earlier versions of Office. I can't seem to find a way within Office
2007 Beta to simply disable the automatic virus scan.

If anyone knows how to disable the automatic virus scan from within Office,
please let me know.

Hi Lee
Thanks for the help it looks like I will just have to delete it all.
Cheers,

If you look in 'Add/Remove Programs' and click Show Updates, the Beta 2 TR is
listed as an update but it cannot be removed. The only way you would be able
to do it is to remove Office 2007 (everything) and then re-install Beta 2
only.

Hi Lee
I have tried to reinstall , still the same. Is there anyway to uninstall the
beta refresh? to get back to just the beta version.

"Lee" wrote:

Tried re-installing?

They probably directed you to this page becasue this is a BETA product and
there is very limited technical support, mostly just these newsgroups!

I had been running the Beta 2 of Office no problem. When I installed the

Can anyone help as all microsoft do is direct you to this page.
