RE: New Windows update stops Office 2007 B2 Cold

Thanks Patrick... I haven't had time to work on it since last night, but
that will be the first thing I un-install this morning.

The culprit was probably the Outlook 2003 update. There is a bug in the
2007 setup which prevents 2003 from being completely removed all the
time. So you might have remnants of 2003 left and when you install a
patch for 2003, those remnants get patched. As there can always only be
one Outlook on a computer at any point in time, the remnants cause you
trouble with 2007.
Running Office Diagnostics from 2007 should normally resolve those
issues permanently.

UPDATE ONE...

FIRST of all, I forgot to mention that I DID install the tech refresh that
was released yesterday BEFORE reporting this problem, and it did NOT correct
the situation.

Ok, so I reverted back to just before the first of the "Software
Distribution Service 2.0" updates, and Office went back to normal. When I
opened Outlook though, I got the "Preparing to install" and the "Please wait
while Windows configures Microsoft Office Professional 2007 (Beta)"
notifications. THEN it was back to normal.

WELL, at least as far as Office is concerned! As soon as my system rebooted
following the checkpoint restore, I got a McAfee VirusScan error stating that
an "activeshield component is missing or corrupt". McAfee immediately
started downloading an update which, after a few minutes, corrected the
problem.

NOW, everything is back to the way it was before the Windows Autoupdate. I
am going to go through each of the potential problems one at a time and see
which one was the culprit. (Unless someone has beaten me to it and wants to
let the rest of the world know!) I'll report as soon as I find it!

Last night, my computer automatically downloaded and installed the following
Windows Updates:

Windows XP Update KB922582
Windows XP Update KB920872
Security Update KB919007
Security Update KB920685
Update for Outlook 2003 - Junk E-mail filter KB921580

This automatic update stopped Office 2007 B2 cold. When trying to open
Outlook, I now get the error message "Cannot start Microsoft Outlook. Cannot
initialize Microsoft Office Shared Utilities. Restart your computer or
reinstall Microsoft Outlook."

When trying to open Word or Excel: "There is not enough memory or disk
space to run Word (Excel)."

Of course, I have restarted (twice) to no avail and have shut down any
memory intensive application. Nothing seems to work. I am going to roll
back my system to before it installed the updates and I'll report back here.
