What do you mean by "removing the only entry in Add/Remove Programs"?
If it isn't installed then there really isn't a way to uninstall it.
It sounds like what you are seeing are the installation files for the
trial version. I suspect since you purchased it this way the files are
part of the image HP used.
Have you considered installing the trial and then turn around and
uninstalling it? I'm wondering if that would trigger the clean up of
the installation files. That's what I would try anyway. If it doesn't
work then after uninstalling you're almost right back to where you
started. There will be a few files and Registry entries that won't be
cleaned up when you uninstall but they are needed for your retail
version anyway and any paths that would need to be corrected will be
corrected by your retail Office installation.
Although if all you have are the installation files then it could just
be a matter of deleting them since, again, if it isn't installed then
there isn't anything to uninstall.

Dear Beth:
What I see on my Hard Drive is the following under My Computer, c:
Local
Disk (this is XP Pro, after removing the only entry in Add/Remove
Programs, a
7MB entry called Office Trial Assistant:
c: SWSETUP
1. a folder called OffTriW, 3.02MB, you open it, and yes there are
all kinds
of files in there, but no uninstaller
2. a folder called PLOff03Tri, 1.91MB (yes, there are files in
there, no
uninstaller
3. a folder called Preload, 228MB, with subfolders called
Office03Tri and
Office11del, but no uninstallers
c: Program Files, a folder called Microsoft Office Trial Wizard,
2.82MB, with
all kinds of files, but no uninstaller.
That's what like to uninstall safely without corrupting the system
before I
install
my genuine copy from disks. So far I haven't been able to get an
answer
from HP Support or Microsoft.
Thanks for any help!

How do you know it's there? What I'm asking is do you see a file?
Do
you see references in the Start Menu?

Dear JoAnn, that does not help, because as I indicated, this
Trial
software
has never been installed and there is nothing in Add/Remove to
hit;
OK? Clear?
I tried running the Windows Installer Cleaner, as I said before,
and
nothing
with the name Trial appears on it, I guess because there has been
no
install.
There is nothing in the Microsoft.com website that pops up when
you
run a
search
for uninstall Microsoft Office Standard Edition Trial. The only
thing in the
knowledge
base that shows up is how to convert this trial. It's seems
really
odd to me
that
Microsoft and HP would install a product on a laptop that can't
be
removed
safely.
There is no uninstaller I can find in any of the folders that I
mentioned
that are sitting on my Hard Drive under SWSETUP or Progam Files.
This trial software is just sitting on my brand new laptop with
no
way to
uninstall it safely, HP and Microsoft seemingly don't know how,
and
I can't
install my genuine copy of Office 2003 until it's gone. Any
resources or
suggestions to try that you know of??? Thanks
.
