System restore did not fix the problem, so don't waste your time (although I'm puzzled as to why, but I tried and so did some other people).

It should be removeable.

I'll bet you got the latest security patch installed. Uninstall KB908531 for right now. Microsoft is working on a fix, but in some cases it causes the problems you describe.

To uninstall:

Start, Settings, Control Panel / Add Remove Programs / Click the checkbox for "Show Updates"
