Wheel double-click in Office Apps

I've seen another post with this issue, but no responses, and thought I'd
give it a go.

I have a Microsoft Intellipoint optical USB mouse. The wheel is set to be a
double-click when pressed. This works fine in all applications except when
inside the Open, Save As, and related file-browsing dialog boxes in all
Office 2003 applications. All other apps (ie.Adobe), File-->Open, and
wheelmouse clicking the folders will open them as expected. Using Open or
Save As in Word (and any Office App), I need to actually double click the
folders, the wheelmouse will only act as a single click at first. It DOES
act as a double click if I select the folder first, to highlight it, and
THEN click the wheelmouse (even after waiting a while, to verify the wheel
IS actually double-clicking, not just follow-up clicking on the first one
that highlighted the folder), but this is not necessary in any other
application. When USING the Office applications, the wheelmouse acts as
doubleclick also (ie. selecting whole words/paragraphs in Word, or setting
off double-click events in Access). So the problem seems only to be in the
file-browsing dialog boxes in Office 2003 applications. No problem in
Windows Explorer.

Anyone know why this would be the case? Like I said, at least one other
person out there has the same problem.

I'm using Windows XP Pro, Office 2003, both with all current updates,
patches, service packs, etc.

Thanks for any help or commisseration.
