Ah! Good sluthing. Is XP still saving the problem spread*** as a Excel 5. 95 or 97 type file, or is it converted to an "XP" version?

.. I have just realized that the files that gave me
trouble were originally created with Office 98 (or something of that vintage) and were opened and then saved in XP. The passwords were set after the files had been used in XP for some time \

I don't think the source of the problem is worthwhile pursuing further but I hate to be the one to find out about bugs, especially ones that no one but me seems to see :-)

To the best of my knowledge, it is an XP file with no obvious differences from currently created files. How do you tell anyway? It is listed as a "Microsoft Excel Work***" as are files created recently. However, if I place the cursor over worksheets *known* to be created by Excel 98 and on a separate partition, I get the same result.
