Have you tried Detect and Repair? What Service Pack level is Office at?

Post all replies to the group to keep the discussion intact. Due to
the (insert latest virus name here) virus, all mail sent to my personal
account will be deleted without reading.
After furious head scratching, ITriedEverything asked:
| We have several systems with a standard build of win xp pro, office
| xp pro each machine is experiencing a problem when attempting to
| start ms word or ms excel, basically when attempting to open either
| application the user receives an "out of memory" error, we have
| determined that the cause of the error is that a previous instance of
| the application has locked in process (i.e winword.exe is still in
| process list although application has closed), we have tried
| reinstalling both OS and Office also updates and spent several hours
| trying to google for a solution but to no avail, we would appreciate
| a solution to this problem asap as it is inhibiting our users from
| working efficiently.
