What version of Office?
What version of Windows?
Are there templates that are attached to these files that
may be tied to locations no longer available?
Are there inactive drive mappings or FTP sites listed in
LookIn on these PCs?
Is a printer driver selected and, if a network printer is
access to the driver available?

Some of my users on are experinceing this issue, but not all of them.
Basiclly Word and some Excell docs hang and/or lock the machine when
atempting to open them.
Normally all our files are on our data server and they open them via virtual
drives, but i figured, well let's save the doc they are atempting to open off
the server to their local drive to see if that is the issue. After saving it
locally and atempting to open it i knotice the network icon flash in the
system tray.. and Word hangs as normal, so i close word (via end task) and
unplug the cat5.. start the word doc from local and it pops up fine, close
it.. plug the network cable back in fine and it hangs...
Anyone know why a word doc on a local machine would be atempting to access
anything to do with the network? >>
