XP is locking up my laptop

I have installed Windows XP on my laptop, which used to have 98SE. At first
there were no problems. Then two problems happened.
One - as I am downloading Norton AntiVirus the system stopped at 80%
complete. Nothing worked. Not even "Ctrl-Alt-Del". I had to flip the back
switch on the laptop to turn it off. This happened 3 more times while trying
to down load the same file.
Two - The screen does not fill the entire monitor, but it did before when I
had 98SE.
I purchased the Windows XP Pro from Journey Education.
