Sorry - not an Office problem. Post to a Windows news group for assistance
or use groups.google.com for a faster answer.

Post all replies to the group to keep the discussion intact. Due to
the (insert latest virus name here) virus, all mail sent to my personal
account will be deleted without reading.

After furious head scratching, Marilyn44 asked:

| How do I disable messenger completely? I have tried everything I
| have ever been told and since the new update to SP2, I cannot get rid
| of it no matter what I do. I have tried msconfig and start up....
| then add remove programs, to the left side chose one of those and
| still nothing.... even had a long number to type into the directory
| and that still won't make it go away.... No offense, but I hate
| messenger and I would like it gone forever... any other way anyone
| knows of to get rid of it? Thanks if you can help.... Marilyn email

|| Bob,
||
|| The method varies a bit depending on your operating system. You need
|| to go to services (on Windows 2000/XP this can be accessed by
|| right-clicking My Computer and choosing 'Manage...')
||
|| Find the 'Windows Messenger' service and go to its properties. Set
|| the startup of the service to 'Disabled'
||
|| This can affect some network programs, but they're few and far
|| between - most people nowadays just have the messenger service
|| disabled.
