Application layer printing/spooler problems

On Win2k pro and NT4 workstations the spooler is going crazy everytime we try
to print from within an application. I can print a test page by connecting to
the printer and sending one, without any problems, but when trying to print
anything from an application (word, excel etc) the spool service takes a high
percentage of processor time on the local machine and does nothing. Only some
machines are affected, some running Office XP Pro, some running Office 97
Pro. Seems to be spooler related rather than application related as even
printing to Adobe Acrobat Distiller falls over!

Any ideas?
