my home computer which the operating system is XP professional. I did do
a find for normal.dot file and nothing came up except the file I have on
my desktop, which is the file I need put in place of the original one. I
find it strange that the find did not find it. I know there has to be
one.

Normal.dot is normally located in \Documents and
Settings\{username}\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates. The Application
Data folder is typically hidden, which prevents the search process from
looking into it unless you you set the option to show hidden files and
folders. I recommend that everyone do that as a matter of course. It's
one of the first changes I make whenever I start up a newly installed
system.

Control Panel > Folder Options > View > Advanced settings box > Show
hidden files and folders
