Hi Michael,
I believe I answered your questions on Links elsewhere and I suspected
the underlying question was due to a printing issue. :-)
If the source files are not available and the links are set to
Automatic or Manual and under Tools/Options/Print/Update fields is
turned on then I suspect Word is searching for the source in order to
update the links and the document is printed before Word 'times out'
searching for the source. So part of the document may print correctly
but the rest may not. You might be able to turn off "Background
printing" under Tools/Options/Print to control this issue.
However since you can't control the options for the printing company
you need to is Lock the links so Word doesn't search for the source.
Additionally, as I noted in my other reply, the Field Security patch
could be part of the issue with inconsistency here too. It sounds like
your field security is set to Medium since you are prompted to update
the links when you open the document. Or it could be set to High which
prevents fields from updating on Print. The printing company may not
have the Field Security patch and the fields are attempting to update
automatically on print.
Here's an article which contains more information on the Field
Security patch:

Note the Low setting is the behavior of Word without the patch.
