Thanks for that info! The problem is not necessarily that the "AutoRecover
Files" is enabled, it is that the value was blank, meaning no path was
specified. With no path specified, the error is received. If a path is
specified, no error! For informational purposes...the setting is in
gpedit.msc -> user configuration -> administrative templates -> microsoft
office word 200x -> word options -> advanced -> file locations. If you do
not have these folders, you need to install the template from the office .adm
files. Thanks to all for the help!

Not sure if this is related to your scenario but it appears that a group
policy setting "Autorecover" for Word 2007 has the effect of causing
execution of this statement to fail. At this stage the work around was to
make the setting "Not configured".
