Re: WMP stream vs Flash stream

If you're buffering beyond 60 seconds for an extended clip, you'd run out of

stream with that kind of disparity).  That's not really streaming.  On the
other hand, it sounds like perhaps you want file streaming where playback
begins once enough of the file is downloaded - letting the player decide the
"buffer" needed.   That's the analog to the Flash functionality you're
describing, and can be done from your favorite web server.

If Flash makes you happy, party on with it.  I don't want to influence you,
I'm just here once in a while to help explain how things work. =)

That function is crapy cuase it only can be set to maximum 60 seconds. And
this will only work on the computer that changed the setting.

So I guess that WMP don't have that good function for streaming. So if I
will put my WMP files on my webserver for streaming so is it best to do
them
in flash instead?

You can set WMP's buffering cache in the player's Tools:Options:Network
options.

Is it possible to configurate the Windows media player so it always
load
ahead when you watch a clip on the internet?  If I take youtube for
exampel
(they using Flash), if you have a slow connection you can pause the
clip
and
wait until it have downloaded the whole clip before you watch it.
I need the same function for WMP, does it exist?

Expanding a bit, some major media sites use special(or true) media
servers, and these must be used for live audio or video broadcasts.
For a live broadcast you must have a connection faster than the
download speed required for the live broadcast, or the media will not
play at all or stop and start a lot. Some streaming servers are set up
to offer multiple streams of various speeds, and sometimes the highest
usable bitrate for your connection is detected and automatically set.
Besides the special streaming server, a lot of server side code often
is used.

Progressive download, sometimes called progressive download streaming,
will work well on an ordinary html server unless the server is badly
overloaded(as is often the case for free sites) or you have a very
popular site and many try to view the media at once. Of course
progressive download is not suited for live radio and video
broadcasts. Again, just how this works is determined by how you encode
the audio or video files, and what type of server side code is used.
Download is to a temporary cache. When you are buffered enough for the
download speed detected, the media starts playing. If there is a
sudden reduction in download speed, the media may pause a while to
allow download to catch up. Various media types can be encoded to show
various controls or not, a progress bar for the download etc.

See http://www.cwdjr.net/audio5/RoscoeSings.php for an example of
audio offered in your selection of multiple formats. Also see
http://www.cwdjr.net/video4/cancanL.php for video examples. This
involves extensive use of php script on the server. Notice how wide a
range of control displays I have used on the various players, and most
players allow a wide range of control displays,or no controls shown at
all. The situation is especially interesting for mp3 on the audio
page. If you have set your browser to make some player primary for
mp3, then the mp3 will completely download and then open in the
primary player for it you have selected. However if you have selected
no primary player for mp3, you may be asked where you wish to download
the mp3 file. In my case, the mp3 downloads and opens in Winamp. It
can take Winamp a while to come up and automatically start playing
after the download is complete.
