I'm running a clean install of XPHome, SP2.  I haven't installed any
media players, audio or video, yet.  The clean install included WMP 9,
but I haven't installed it yet.  I assume if I do, it'll find the WMP
11 update online, and ask me if I want to install it.  I'm pretty sure
I'll use WMP 11 for audio storage, ripping, and playback.  My
understanding is that WMP 11 already has the audio codecs I need for
these purposes.

In order to watch DVDs, I know I need to install a DVD codec, but I'm
not sure which one is the best, or even how they interact if you have
more than one media player installed, and more than one DVD codec
installed.

I do have two other media players, that include DVD codecs, available
on disk to install: Sonic/Roxio Creator & MyDVD 7.0, and Cyberlink
Power DVD 8.0.  I like the interface on both, and on WMP.  I'd like to
install all three.

A few questions:
1) If I install both the Sonic and Cyberlink players, will they each
use their own codecs?
2) If I install all three players, including WMP 11, what DVD codec
would WMP 11 use?
3) Can I direct WMP 11 which codec to use?  Can I direct ANY player to
use ANY DVD codec?
4) If I use WMP 11, is it best not to install one of the other full
version players, and just purchase a DVD codec, such as one of the
ones suggested on the WMP 11 site, here:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/plugins.aspx#DVD...

I have also read the following, but I wanted to ask what's 'your'
opinion/experience.

I would say install your players first and then worry about codecs
only if you run into problems. I have XP sp3 and many players working
on it including WMP 11, Cyberlink PowerDVD, the complete Roxio and
Nero suites, Real 11, Winamp, QT, iTunes, and several other players.
The main thing to watch is to select only one player to be the primary
player for a certain file type. For example Real 11 player will ask if
you want it to play everything it can. If you accept, Real will play
most of the files that WMP and several other players will play,
leaving little for the other players to play automatically. Of course
for many players you can first open them and input either an address
on the computer or the url of a web page. It will then usually play
the sound file if it is capable, even if it has not been selected as
primary player for that file type. Always choose to select that a
player play only the file types you wish it to play.
Roxio and Nero suites both have drag to disk functions. At least for
certain versions, you can install a drag to disk program on only one
of them, or strange problems result. Also the WMP can have strange
problems if the Roxio drag to disc program is installed. I do not know
about the Nero version of drag to disc, since I have never installed
it because it and the Roxio one do not work right together.

Many programs look for codecs installed on the computer if they need
one, so you usually do not have to do anything here unless a player
will not work or tells you it needs a codec.

Very likely you will be offered an update for your WMP automatically.
If not, go to the Windows XP update site. There there should be a WMP
11 and likely several other updates that you do not have. I would take
any critical security updates, but there is no need to add an update
if you do not now need what it does. You can always update later. I am
set to not install updates automatically but to be notified that
updates are available. I like to know what the update is about before
it is installed.

Likely the most important thing to do is install your security program
before you connect to your isp the first time. Then go to the update
site for your security program and update there at once. Also if you
are offered or find security updates at the XP update site, take these
as soon as possible. Then you can worry about players etc.
