Media Player Won't Start

When I try to start Windows Media Player, I get an error message: "log off from Windows, log back on, then start Media Player." I have not had a problem in the past. I am using XP. I'm not sure how to log off from Windows, since I don't log on (at least not manually). I tried to reboot (shut down says I am logging off Windows), but that doesn't make any difference. Still the same error message. What's wrong?
