Selection of target audio device possible at the WMP SDK level?

Our automation system currently has to use various third party players if
our customers want to use software based audio players for output to a
multi-zone audio distribution system. We'd like to get away from this, and
the requirement to have someone logged in in order to start up these GUI
based players. Doing a headless WMP wrappered player that we can control and
invoke multiple instances of that run under our driver hosting service would
be a huge step forward.
Beyond the issue of whether WMP (in it's headless guise) will choke if you
attempt to run it in a service, or run multiple instances of it in an app,
which I'd definitely like to have some guidance on as well, this will also
require selection of a target audio device by each instance. Is this
something that is doable at the COM level on a per-instance basis? Or would
this get us into DirectShow type territory and building a graph and all
that? We would much prefer to let WMP build the graph automatically based on
media type, and just to select the target output if that is possible.
