Hi William,
That is one interesting discovery.
I'm glad that you got rid of the annoying thing but the bug may still be
there (somewhere:-).
First off after WMP installation the /prefetch parameter is not always
present in the shortcut you've mentioned. It wasn't here. Anyway I added
/Task:NowPlaying (speaks 4 itself)
It is not well documented one. For example, you will not find it in here

Another interesting reading despite it is not directly related to
"non-stop-on-exit" issue would be this:

Especially intriguing paragraph starts from
"...The /prefetch:# flag is looked at by the OS when we create the process -
however.",
which means that the workaround used by you may or may not work in other
situations where "invisible" /prefetch supplied.
Probably some MS Guru will eventually will pour some light.
