I never saw any attachment - perhaps I'm behind something that stripped that
out? Plain text in your post might work better.......

...I guess ZACHD has given up on me and this problem. Anyone else have
any ideas? AVI files will still not play in WMP, WinDVD, ...
Thanks.....RDK

...OK. I have attached my answers ot the questions from the link you
supplied below. Please see the attached Word doc.
Right now I'm at wits end to understand and solve this problem. I'm
willing to install Windows Media Player 10, but did not want to until I
had corrected this problem since, as you already mentioned, I feel that
the problem is deeper than WMP.
Really would appreciate any help or "Do this" suggestions you might
have......RDK

If WMP can't play c:\windows\clock.avi , the chances are about one in a
million that any codec pack could correct whatever is going on. There's
a
difference between "codec missing" and "AVIs not playing at all" -
codecs
should only be able to address the former, but codec packs can *break*
the
latter.
I supplied this link earlier:
http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html#isolate
which really covers the wide range of interesting questions here.

...OK, I downloaded the "Xvid Koepi" CODEC and ran the install.
Rebooted
and tried Window Media Player 9 again. Same error, same message. Now
what?
I tried reinstalling WMP9 and it still gives the same error
message......RDK

AVI is an open format that lets you plug in a huuuuuuge variety of
codecs - over 800 at last check.

....Yes, I agree that I have a CODEC problem. But first, since AVI
is a
Microsoft supported format and since all the other file types seem to
be
OK, why can I just find the AVI CODEC and reinstall it?
Also I really like to know how this could happen. I would understand
if
my MPEG or DivX files stopped playing, but AVI???

Try installing an Xvid/Divx codec (e.g. Xvid by Koepie, works fine
here). Seems ur having a codec problem.
