Then I guess I shouldn't have done it, when I fixed my system back when.
Huh??? Guess I was lucky.
Never had a problem since.
My understanding is that System Protection does not affect non-critical
files ... in this case ... wmp*.*
Also, the persons question was wanting to uninstall WMP? Should we leave
them hanging? Maybe Microsoft could help ... oh that's right ... you have
to pay Microsoft for support on broken products. I forgot!!!!

That's creative, but it's not particularly sound nor safe since you're
missing a bunch of files that you're going to leave mismatched and broken
(and boy howdy won't it be fun if System File Protection starts kicking
in...). It's also probably not going to help, since it sounds like the
problem is down in the Audio Driver / MCI areas of the system, which your
steps don't cover...
I would most heartily recommend against following this advice. It's meant
in good faith, but it's not a particularly viable solution overall. =\

Do any entries for Windows Media Player show in Add/Remove programs
(ensure that Show Updates is checked).
Did you check the registry Uninstall key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall
Once there, click on Uninstall. From that start point, Click on menu
Edit | Find and search for Windows Media.
You are looking for the UninstallString specific to Windows Media Player
11 and 10 (since you said that you tried WMP 11).
Do Windows Media Player in this ordere 11 then 10.
When UninstallString is found for both/one,
1. Right click on UninstallString and select Modify.
2. After the dialog window comes up, the value should be highlighted,
enter Ctrl-C (this will copy the string to the windows clipboard)
3. Close window
4. Click on Start Menu | Run
5. Click on textbox and enter a Ctrl-V (this places text from windows
clipboard into the textbox)
6. Click OK
Now this should go through and uninstall AGAIN, you may get and error.
My UninstallString for WMP 11 is:
"C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\Setup_wm.exe" /Uninstall
For WMP 10:
MsiExec.exe /I{33BB4982-DC52-4886-A03B-F4C5C80BEE89}
Keep in mind, WMP 10 is a Windows Component and should not show up in
Add/Remove Programs. You need to:
1. Open Add/Remove Programs
2. Click on Add/Remove Windows Components
3. At the bottom of the list, you should see Windows Media Player
4. Uncheck the item
5. Click Next
Windows will now verify and install/uninstall what should be there
depending on the settings. In this case, if you unchecked Windows Media
Player, Windows will uninstall.
Once this is completed, you can go in any rename some registry keys that
support Windows Media Player. It's safe since as far as Windows is
concerned, Windows Media Player does not exist.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MediaPlayer
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MediaPlayer
Now, rename the C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player.
I LIKE TO RENAME IN CASE I HAVE TO RESTORE BACK.
Hopefully, you have the Windows Uninstaller Cleanup Tool (msicuu.exe).
If not, you should get and cleanup the Uninstall items for Windows Medai
Player. If you don't, POSSIBLY, the next time you reboot, Windows may
try to re-install. Shouldn't, since you cleaned out from Windows
Component.
Now rename (or move) the support DLLs. They are all under
C:\Windows\System32\wmp*.dll
I just create a new folder and at a command prompt:
1. CD c:\windows\system32
2. MKDIR WMPFiles
3. MOVE wmp*.dll WMPFiles
If you run into Windows File Protection problem, you may want to do this
from a reboot Safe Mode Command Prompt.
After this, it's best to verify the cleanup procedure for registry
settings. I'll tell you right now, since I've gone thru this, it ain't
easy. There are a lot of remnants left over.
I use a freeware program www.ccleaner.com (the slim version - not Yahoo
toolbar auto-install). This will go and verify the registry is in order.
If you have another app, e.g., Registry Mechanic or Registry Fix, use
that.
Just to give you an idea, the WMP support Classes start at:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\WMP.AudioCD and go on forever. Uninstalling WMP (all
versions) should have removed all these. Most of the times it doesn't.
WELL ... I've given you enough ... didn't think that it was this
encompassing ... huh?!?
Need additonal help ... feel free to e-mail ... if that's ok. Don't know
... some forums frown on that.

I've tried that. I'm unable to remove it. I need to find a way to remove
it via the registry. I've tried to upgrade, rollback delete and nothing
works. I have windows xp sp2 which may tell you why I can't remove it. I
did have wmp 11 installed at one time but it would not play the wav
files either.
Another tip.
I can make a wave file in sound recorder and am able to play it in other
than ms player . If I convert the wav to mp3 it then plays in wmp. I
think I have a corrupted codec or decoder and that's why I'd appreciate
some help other than control panel add/remove.
Thanks.
Not an expert but not a dummy. at least that's what my mommy say's. :-)

Will not play wav files and at wits end.Control panel: add/remove programs.
I have tried all known ways to get wav files to play in wmp 9 and 10
and 11
I now would like to remove wmp completely from my system. Using win xp
sp2. Even if I have to edit and remove all reg entry's.
I'd appreciate some help doing this.. procedures or whatever.
Thanks
