Re: Problem with Embedded Player

Hi, Zach

I wasn't trying to be obstructive. It's such a featureless error, I was hoping that you might think "Ah! I've seen that before" rather than diagnosing it. I've been through the MS support pages many times and nothing explains this problem. Similarly, if I was given an error message, I'd know how to get more info from MS. In the hope you may just be able to help further, here are the answers to your "isolate" questions.

Does the file mmswitch.ax exist on your system?

No

What operating system are you using?

Windows XP Home Edition (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 2

What exact version of Windows Media Player are you using?

10.00.00.4019

What type of issue are you having? A bug, a feature request, or something else?

On some web pages the WMP works, for instance, Wacky Vids. On other pages, e.g. IMDB, it just hangs with a blank screen and no error message. PutFile is another common site that doesn't work for me. I'd say that the majority of times I've come across the embedded player, it doesn't play on my set up. Any web page that calls the player (not embedded in the page) works fine. Real Player embedded in a page (e.g. BBCi site) works fine. My laptop, which uses the same wireless server, has no problem with the embedded player. I've done a side-by-side comparison of the internet options between the laptop and my problematic desktop and they're identical. I've also tried the desktop with a free-standing ADSL modem with no luck.

Does this happen in other players? Which ones?
Both Real Player and Quicktime work fine in all circumstances. If IMDB offers viewing a trailer using WMP or RP, say, WMP never works and RP always does.
Does it happen in/with both "mplayer2.exe" and "wmplayer.exe", if applicable? This is a critical question. "mplayer2.exe" (WMP6) is already on your system in the C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player directory.

I have both applications. I don't understand how a web page uses these, so I'm not sure

Does this happen for files saved locally, files played back from the Internet, or both?

Only Internet with embedded players

Does this happen only if the file has video, or does it happen for all files?

It happens for pure audio, as well. Sites using RP are ok.

What type of file are you trying to play? Is it an MPEG, ASF, AVI, MIDI, WAV, or what?

Don't really know. Whatever the various sites are streaming to me

Does this happen for all files of that type, or just certain ones? There's a sample page here if you need to see what files you can successfully still play.

I'm getting "The Requested Web Page is Not Available" when I click any of these

What are the steps that you follow in order to produce the error?

Single click the link/icon on the web page. Nothing special

What are you doing when you get the error?

Nothing else. No other apps running.

How could someone else cause the error to happen their computer?

I don't know but I've seen a number of postings on various forums from people with this problem or one very like it. Unfortunately, never resolved.

If the problem occurs with content on the Internet, what URL do you use to encounter the problem?

Many. See my description of the problem, above. http://uk.imdb.com/ and http://www.putfile.com/ are good examples. http://www.wackyvids.com/ works fine.

What video card do you have?

NVIDIA GeForce 6800 GT

What sound card do you have?

On board. Realtek AC97 Audio

Does this same error occur on any other computer?

My laptop, on the same wireless server, works perfectly

If this is a networking problem, what is your networking configuration? (And note this addresses most networking issues.)

This is a 'home' problem. I use a wireless broadband server but that's it. I've also used an ADSL modem directly and still had the problem

If there's an error code, what is it? What exactly does the error text say? Most critically, what is the error code number if present?

If there was an error code I might be able to track this down myself. The embedded player appears with a black screen and "Ready" on the information bar but nothing happens.

If you hit a crash ...

It never crashes or hangs. It just doesn't play the media.

What WMP6 version does this page detect?

N/A

What WMP7+ version does this page detect?

"Windows Media Player is version 10.0.0.4019."

I know this is a tough one. I've been trawling the web on and off for months trying to resolve it. Any help would be gratefully received

Many thanks

M

That's not really anything to go on... either
http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html#isolate
or (more likely)
http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html#psssupport
may help... "Ready" doesn't give me anything to work with. =\
