Thanks. I appreciate your response.
I honestly can't think of anything I've added or changed. I may have -
but I can't think of a thing.
And I think you're right. Something must have caused this but, for the
life of me, I don't know what.
Do you know how I can restore the:
Windows sounds?
Ability to embed a midi, wav, etc. in OE e-mails?
Ability to play sounds that should be available when I click on a link
in an in-coming e-mail??
Get rid of the "tinny" sound?
At least you responded! That's more than I could get out of the
"WindowsXP Help and Support" newsgroup!
Any ideas you can share will be appreciated.

I'm not sure that this is the newsgroup I need to use but I can't get
answers from the "help and support" bunch.
Anyway here's my problem:
A few days ago my pc quit playing the STARTUP and SHUTDOWN sounds from
WindowsXP.
Outlook express will not play midis, wavs, etc. that others send me.
Outlook express will not play when I embed sounds in an outgoing e-mail
(when I send these to myself they won't play either.
I can access a midi or wav with Window Explorer and play it but the
sound is "tinny".
I've gone to Control Panel/Sounds, etc. and everything looks normal..
I've downloaded updated Codecs and that didn't help.
I use WinXP2....
my first comment is things don't happen on their own without something
having been modified or added. The addition of other media playing
software can change or alter the way WMP plays files.
What have you added...........
What have you changed...........
I am not being funny but these must be answered first.
Perhaps a restore back to before you recall this problem......
I really meant a full system restore.......Start, Control Panel, Performance
and Maintenance then top left See Also.....System Restore............pick a
date before you experienced the problem.
You have not installed something like Real Player to maybe watch a video
download. These types of software can over ride all other music playing
systems.
Do you have onboard sound ie built into the Mother Board or is it a separate
PCI Sound card. Either way you could try reinstalling the drivers. Or go
into Device Manager and delete the sound and video games controller settings
altogether. Then do a restart and let windows reset it. I have never had to
do this myself but Windows will look for the missing parts and reset them as
required.
