I was having a lot of trouble with jerky playback on videos-
turned out I needed to update my video drivers to be compatible
with DirectShow (or maybe is was DirectX) 9. Try going to your
video card manufacturers website and downloading the newest
drivers and see if that helps.
If that's not it, I have no idea.

P.S.- can anyone tell me if there is a way to prevent videos from
launching browser pop-up windows when playing back in WMP 7.1?
