I found the fix, but thought I'd report the problem I encountered -
Playback of .avi files didn't create a problem, but playing back an .mpg
file would cause my Windows taskbar to disappear. This happened regardless
of the taskbar autohide setting -- happened when enabled and disabled. Even
the Windows key on my keyboard wouldn't bring back the taskbar, forcing me
to alt-tab to bring up and close down other applications and finally
ctrl-alt-delete to shutdown and reboot. Occasionally I would encounter a
"non-responsive application" program with title CiceroUIWndFrame.exe during
the shutdown process.
The apparent "fix" was to download and update to Microsoft's MDAC 2.8. Now
I can play .mpg files and still retain my taskbar.
