I have Windows 2000 and did a reinstall about 2 months ago.
Everything was working great until a few weeks ago. It might have
been when I installed RealPlayer or right after I uninstalled it, but
I can't see video in Media Player 9 or 6.4. It only plays audio.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled MP 9 twice, no success.
Now I'm back to MP 6.4.09.1128, as it came out of the box, and that
doesn't show video either. When I click on a video file (.wmv, mpeg,
etc.) it does a lot of accessing the web and finally tells me that "A
decompressor ws downloaded for this file, but it didn't work. You may
need to restart your player or browser." The Advanced button lists
all attempted downloads, and for most of them it gives an error
message 80040200.
The "More Help" button takes me to a MS web page that is pretty much
useless. It tells me that my security settings are too high or that I
don't have IE 3.2 (?!), or several other unlikely helps.
I don't have MP 9 installed right now. The error messages are
different, but the gist is the same and the result is the same, no
video (audio only).
Is there a fix or a web site that clearly explains how to fix this?
