Service Pack 3 upgrades have auto come to my computer. It is a Windows XP
medica centre. I don't use the media centre it is just the system I have at
work. I am sure that Service Pack 2 is already on. It says that I need to
back up my computer before installing service pack 3. I have read some stuff
on this and it all seems too hard (amature). 1. Is it necessary to instal
service pack 3 and why (I do use internet).
Yes, very much so. If you receive some file through any manner (USB
memory stick, dodgy CD of files, etc), it may contain stuff which
causes security problems that would require you to start from scratch.
If you user the internet at all (the PC is connected to the internet)
then it's very likely that a range of security compromises since SP2
would be able (in theory) to raid any details you type in of credit
cards on websites and passwords pretty much anywhere, due to a global
security problem with the DNS (internet/website name system) which
affects everyboy - even Macs !
I don't know how to fully back
up the computer but always back up stuff I am working on. 2. If things go
wrong after installation where do i go onthe computer to remove it and what
do I look for to remove it.
Try making sure you have at least windows firewall ticked in the
taskbar, that you have automatic updates switched on and always set to
install automatically, and that you have software which protects
against Viruses and Trojan software.
A MS "blessed" way to do this is to have a pay-for subscription to
microsoft OneCare. Other vendors of antivirus and related software
include McAffee, Norton, and the free + good NOD32 for example
http://www.eset.com/products/nod32.php
Some vendors have online versions of these tools for (slow but free)
scans, such as
http://security.symantec.com/sscv6/default.asp?langid=ie&venid=sym
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-au/default.htm?mkt=en-au
3. Can I just set a restore point before installing and let the install run
auto?
Yes, usually that wil be set by the installer according to the
settings in Control Panel
Mostly I rely on the trustworthiness of Microsoft and when they auto update
it has 99% been fine. Is it safe to to the same here.
It's safe, though undiscovered issues with updates have happened and
may well occur in the future - but usually they're spotted by
techincal experts pretty quickly (usually not as quickly in the open
source / Linux world though)
Sorry it is a lot in one go but I am reluctant to download auto when there------------------------------------------------
is a warning to backup first. This warning is not usual.
PS Can anyone tell me where these back ups actually go to on the system so
I can find it if I have to delete it. thanks
Can anyone please advise.
