Thanks Neil - this is really clear and appears doable for a novice like myself.
really appreciated,

OK so it's reasonable to assume the audio tracks are done in one.
session - that is, they are all in the same format - e.g. MP3 audio,
128kbps mono.
If the recording (encoding) settings match, the job is much simpler.
Assuming MP3 or WAV files, you can easily tail-end music files
together using Audacity : http://audacity.sourceforge.net/
That will also get you pop-removal and some compensation for
equalisation and wow.flutter is available. Finally, a useful feature
would be to fade-in/fade out, to mask some of the initial crackle of
the 78s (unless you like that sort of effect)
Always *save* the files as high a bitrate as you can e.g. 320kbps
because it's always easier to downgrade them later, whereas you'd
always lose some quality unless you were actually using WMA lossless
to begin with.
If you've already encoded them as WMA (windows media audio) then it's
a bit more awkward. Windows media encoder can join tracks together.
It does that most successfully if you have the settings the same as
the recorded tracks - in that case, it doesn't re-encode them, which
saves any possible quality loss - though there are no EQ or editing
tools. You can get that free from here
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/forpros/encoder/default.mspx
Setting up a series of 'sources' choosing File source, and pressing
the Add Source button would allow you to chain the tracks together.

I am recording jazz from old 78 rpm records. There is an autotracker on the
recorder which inserts track intervals when the music stops for longer than 2
seconds which happens frequently in jazz. Then, where a track interval
occurs, there is extra silence at each end. How do I join the two or more
pieces together again to make a single track?

I Already had done what you suggested, i suppose they kinda work
differently...in itunes i drad and drop to itunes and it moves it to my music
folder whereas with wmp i should drag and drop to my folder and it will
automatically add to wmp.
You say potato and all that.
Cheers again.

You have a few options. In Windows Media Player, you can go to
Tools->Options->Library and click the setting to rearrange your media files
according to your rip settings. This will do like iTunes does and keep your
files organized. I much prefer the way WMP organizes my library than the way
iTunes does. iTunes makes a total mess by splitting collections across
multiple folders.
Also, you can click F3 in Windows Media Player to bring up the Monitor
Folders dialog. Just add the folders you want monitored to the list and it
will automatically find and organize those folders if you have also applied
the setting I wrote of first. Just watch out here. iTunes and WMP will
compete if you're not careful, both trying to organize your folders their own
way.
If you really like the job iTunes has been doing for you then simply set WMP
to monitor the iTunes folders but don't configure WMP to rearrange your
files. Both players then can happily share the same set of media files while
maintaining their own libraries. And WMP has one feature that is just not
available on iTunes - WMP will monitor the folder and you don't have to
manually add every new track to the library.

Hi all,
For many years i have used itunes due to owning an ipod. Now i have two PCs
though, a laptop and a desktop and i use my desktop for the ipod but i now
have vista on the laptop and like the look of WMP11...
One question, is there a function to consolidate my wmp library? Im a little
OCD when it comes to neat files an folders and with itunes when i add tracks
to the library (via simple drag and drop) it copies and renames the files to
my music folder.
I really want to do this as i use several methods to get musoc on my pc,
many of which come with their own download managers...
Thanks in advance.
