Neil,
Thank you very much for your reply.
I checked the device manager and, as you suspected, the Current Transfer
Mode for the Plextor is "PIO Mode" while for the Lite-on it is "Ultra DMA
Mode 2". Both devices are set to "DMA if available".
I also checked the BIOS. My two hard disks are both SATA. The Plextor is on
the Primary IDE Master and the Lite-on on the Primary IDE Slave. Both drives
show that they are capable of PIO Mode 2 and DMA Mode UDMA2. All the
settings are on Auto.
I tried to set the PIO setting of the Plextor from Auto to 0 and the DMA
setting from Auto to UDMA2. But this did not help. The device manager still
shows the Plextor running on PIO.
Just for the record: When I make a cold start and then directly start the
WMP, everything works ok, also the Plextor and that without stuttering.
However when I have been working a while (Internet , Windows Live Messenger,
E-mail etc.) I get the stuttering when I run the WMP using the Plextor,
while the WMP is still running perfectly with the Lite-On.
What can I do next?
Regards,
Konrad

Make sure the Plextor drive is set to its maximum transfer settings.
It's possible that some drivers could have been affected during the
update. IDE DVD / CDRom drives can be set to run in PIO mode, which is
sloooowwww, or use UDMA, often at mode 5 - which requires minimal CPU
overhead and is much faster.
In Control Panel, go to System -> Hardware ->Device Manager, and
inspect the settings for (usually) secondary IDE channel settings.
If both drives are attached to the secondary channel, ensure they are
both set to use UDMA at the highest selectable transfer mode, rather
than PIO (come to think of it, check that for the primary IDE channel
too, if that's where your hard disks are connected, though most are
SATA these days)
There are a wide range of freeware available for benchmarking DVD
drives to make sure they are correctly set to sustain the 6-12Mbps
needed for smooth DVD playback, eg http://www.cdspeed2000.com/

I also wonder whether there is a compatibility problem beween WMP 11 and------------------------------------------------
WinXP SP3.
I have two DVD players, a Plextor DVDR PX716A and a LITE-ON DVD SHD-16P1S.
Both have worked perfectly with SP2.
Recently, I installed SP3 and now the Plextor stutters (audio and video)
when used with WMP 11, while the LITE-ON still runs perfectly.
The strange thing is that there is no stuttering if I run the Plextor with
WinDVD 5.
Any suggestions? Should I try to go back to WMP 10?

I have a PC where I didn't upgrade to WMP 11 yet. I installed XP SP3.
WMP
11 did not show up as one of the Custom Windows Updates. When I
downloaded
WMP 11 and tried to install it, I got an error message stating that I
was
running the wrong version of Windows. Any ideas?
