DVD playback support / info requested

Hi Everyone,
Need some info / support for DVD playback??

I have WXP Prof-SP2 w/all updates, however I'm using WMPlayer 9 which fits
my needs perfectly, I have all the installed updates for the player. I
don't store media in the player only create playlists. I delete the media
files after the playlists are created. I don't have any problem w/the
player offline or online.

I have a OptoRite DVD combo drive, the DC-4801, the DVD supports playback
only. OptoRite, has disappeared. I have Win-DVD 4 (Intervideo) which I
know or recently learned does not support DTS, only supports 2 channels.

Okay, the support / info or understanding I need is to get better
functionality out of my DVD player. The player IS very selective and
consistent in what it will play for me. Of course, the DVD;s it playes can
also be viewed w/WMPlayer.

I get no errors, they just DON'T play, it's like *NO DISC IN THE PLAYER*.
These discs will all play in my Sony hooked up to the TV. These are mostly
music DVD's / concerts, etc... I don't play movie DVD's using the OptoRite
player. I CAN play movie extensions stored on my pc, .mpg and .avi will play
with Win DVD & of course WMPlayer.

My Sony plays everything, all commercial DVD's, however I do get these DVD's
from a pharmaceutical company that will not play on my Sony, Sony says,
*can't play disc*, these discs do play on the OptoRite??

** I suspect I need DVD decoders... (DVD XPack) for Intervideo)??

** or do I need a player software...??

** Do you recommend the VLC Media Player... it's FREE.
From Video Lan. and I understand it contains the necessary codecs for
playing DVDs, and it is small and compact too. > WMPlayer is not compatible
with the player however ??

** Also, DVD XPACK appears to give codec/encoder support for WMPlayer, if
that's the case, I wouldn't need the Win DVD/Intervideo player, am I
correct??

** I don't know much about WIN DVD, vs. 4 is the software that came with the
OptoRite. If I upgraded WIN DVD would I get the functionality... ??

Thanks for answering my questions... **??

Just not sure the best way to go to solve functionality difficulty, thanks.
