Neil:
Most of my files are mono - they are pronunciations for foreign
language instruction.
Do you hear the issue on your machine?
I've seen the link you posted and have tried it on our brand new Dell
laptop, but it doesn't fix the problem. Nor does the disabling of
audio enhancements. But it isn't just the Dell machine that I'm having
trouble with. I've seen it on a number of HP workstations and on a
machine that I built (using the Creative X-Fi card).
Can anyone else on this group verify this issue for me? Do you hear
the audio cutoff problem on either of the files below?

Are they mono audio tracks ? The samples below are.
Sigmtel drivers, particularly on Dell machines, cause 'skipping' at
the end of tracks (MP3 or WMA doesnt matter, last few seconds is where
it happens). Dell never fixed that - it's been known about for over 15
months.
The fix is usually just to disable audio enhancements in the Sound
configuration which does the trick. I guess with very short tracks
like the ones below, the skip would kill it completely.
If it helps, it won't affect most of your customers, and providing
step by step as per this page would make them aware of the issue and
get them running :

I use Windows Media Player to build eLearning applications with
thousands of short audio tracks. Our courses have worked fine for a
long time, but we are experiencing a new problem with the Vista
version of WMP: the very last bit of each audio track gets cut off
early and does not play.
Several other people have suggested the following fix, but it is *not*
working on any of my test machines:
* Click Start- Control Panel- Sound
* Right click on the Speaker/Headphones icon and choose
properties
* Click on the "enhancements" tab
* Select the "Disable all enhancements" check box
* When finished, restart the PC
As suggested, I've also updated my audio drivers to the latest
versions. I've seen it fail with the newest RealTek HD Audio Codecs,
the SigmaTel HD Audio Codecs, and the Creative X-Fi drivers.
I've tested this with both Vista Home and Vista Ultimate on three real
machines and several virtual builds using VMWare. The results are all
the same.
Here are some samples you can try on your machine:

Can anyone help me out? This is very frustrating.
