Wndows Media Player 11 Codecs

I have just had Windows XP reinstalled by the Tech Guys and Windows
Media 11 is installed. It wont play videos and I think I need some
Codecs. I cant make much sense out of the MS Help & Support website on
this matter. They talk about being a Beta copy and tough titty if it
goes pear shaped.
I have searched for freeware/shareware and they all seem to talk
gobblydegook.
Where can I down load some simple codecs from without taking up the
suggested MS links to commercial sites that give me far more functions
than I need.?
