no, I haven't ever touched the registry, and to be honest I'm not sure the
situation is desperate enough for me to try it now. I'd hate to end up with
nothing working properly

Hi Anne,.
Okay, this part of the web help error message URL -> "originalid=C00D7159"
tells me what I believe I need to know.
There's two possible solutions, one involves you not having signed drivers,
the other involves the computer manufacture making a setting to avoid
possible unsigned driver issues.
Since the system came with Vista, I'm going to assume that the drivers are
signed and that it's the setting that needs changing.
Are you familiar with the Registry Editor and how comfortable are you with
doing registry editing?
if you're familiar with the registry editor, there's most likely a setting
at the following path:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Audio]
The setting name is DisableProtectedAudioDG and you probably have a setting
of 1 there. If you have this setting, changing it to 0 should resolve the
problem, just make sure that you don't have WMP running when you make the
change.
If you aren't familiar with the Registry Editor, let me know and I'll
provide detailed instructions.

This is the message I get when I try to play one of the blocked tunes
"Windows Media Player encountered a problem while playing the file. For
additional assistance, click Web Help."
When I click web help, this is the page I get
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/webhelp/default.aspx?&mpver=11.0.6000.6344&id=C00D11B1&contextid=216&originalid=C00D7159
nothing on that page, that I can see, offers a solution to my problem, and I
no longer get a prompt to acquire a licence, I only saw this message once, on
only one track
When I bought my first computer in 2001, I transferred all my music on
cd's, vinyl records, and tapes, onto the computer. I have never bought music
on line, and Windows Media player has always played them correctly.
On my xp machine, I have not upgraded to WMP11, and they still play
correctly on there. My Vista laptop of course came with WMP11 already
installed so I haven't the option of rolling back to 10. The strange thing
is that other tracks, put onto the computer in exactly the same way, play
without any problem.
I appreciate the help you are giving me in this, and even if you can't find
a solution for me, thank you for trying

Are these tracks that you created (ripped from a CD), were given to by
someone else, or tracks that you purchased?
My reason for asking is that there are different possible resolutions (if
one exists) for each of the scenarios.
The third scenario, tracks that you purchased, to "fix" this, you would need
to go back to the place you purchased the tracks from and re-acquire a
license from them.
If they're tracks that you ripped, then you should get a prompt to reacquire
the license ( you can do this up to ten times). If they're tracks that you
got from someone else that they ripped with protection, then it's possible
that the ten times has been used up.
I would need to know the exact error that you're receiving, including what
the web-help link is to know which applies to your situation.

The first time I tried to play one of the songs in question, taken from my xp
computer to my new vista laptop, I got a message about a licence being
required, sorry I can't remember it completely and I've never had it since.
This is what made me think it was a DRM issue.
I sent the file via e mail to a computer savvy friend, who also couldn't
play it on his xp machine, but who also got the same 'need a licence'
message. This isn't a modern pop song, it's a lullaby I've had for years.
The other half a dozen songs I found wouldn't play are also quite elderly,
like me
Now when I try to play them I'm directed to Microsoft web site problem
solver, but none of it is a help to me. I would be delighted to get WMP
working properly again

Hi Anne,
If you can play the content in WinAmp, then I don't see how it's a DRM
issue as from what I can tell from the WinAmp site, their product doesn't
support DRM protected WMA files.
Please explain how you came to the conclusion that it's a DRM issue as you
didn't give any error information or warning dialog information in your post.
You need to tell us pertinent information relating to whatever issue you're
experiencing before we can help.

I have found problems when trying to play some of my WMA music files. This
appears to me to be a DRM issue, although I own the music quite legitimately.
Since I can't get them to work, I simply found another media player which
does play them. I cannot understand how it helps Microsoft to force me to
use another player? I am now using Winamp, but much prefer a properly
working WMA
