That message was from 2004, dude ;-))

have had the same problem for months and have exhanged emails with HP
Troubleshooters. Your recommendation was the first advice they gave me, but,

Their advice is out of date (as was the message you quoted)
Which version of media player do you have ?

I do not have a box to check in Advanced tab to "Play videos in web pages"
and have no idea when it went missing as it is only the last few months that
I have tried viewing videos, and I don't know if it was there when I

Probably not. In WMP10 and later IE6 updates, the multimedia sidebar
was removed in favour of letting site owners embed the media directly
in their web pages.

purchased my PC in 2004. I have updated and downloaded everything HP could
throw at me and still cannot play videos in web pages. They now recommend I

Theor recommendations are duds, ignore them/

do System Restore. I have been considering upgrading to Vista. Would this
cure the problem and do I have to uninstall XP before I install Vista. When I

You can do an update, to install Vista over the top of XP. Often it's
a better plan to back up all your critical files onto DVDs / CDs using
some CD burning program, then do a clean install.

try to play the videos on web sites, all I get are static lines, mostly green
with some pink. I would be very grateful for any advice you may have Neil.

Amazingly I'm still here after such a long time LOL ! Well , the geren
lines are often a result of video card drivers which aren't up to
date. Since you got your PC it's almost certain the manufacturer of
the video display card has provided updated software to fix this issue

The first step to check would be to disable or reduce video
acceleration. In media player, go to Tools -> Options menu (pres CTRL
+ M keys together to show menus if they're not visible)

Then go to Performance -> Advanced and turn off Overlays, and turn
down the video acceleration setting. If that fixes the green/pink then
you could update the driver software from the manufacturers website.

Sometimes broken codecs can cause this, but try that first.

Has anyone else got the problem of a missing 'box' to 'tick' ??

Has anyone noticed that in the Windows XP, PS2 version of Internet
Explorer there is no Windows Media? In the PS1 version you could go
to View/Explorer Bar and fine Media. That is missing in the PS2
version! That means you can't play streaming MP3, MPG etc. inside
Internet Explorer. You have to completely download whatever and play
it on another screen.
Is there a fix to that problem???
