Not sure what you mean by "cleaned C"?
It's been a couple of months now since this worked, so I'm reluctant to do a system restore that far back. I'm thinking of trying the CCleaner software to try to clean up my system.
As this is an official Microsoft group I'm disappointed that no Microsoft response has been forthcoming.

Christine. After reading the post from L in Seattle, (thanks L) I thought
things through. Cleaned C then did a system restore to when it was working
fine and recovered my WMP to former state. Looks like you were right about it
being an update thing so I am going to make restore points on a regular
basis. Hope you get it sorted

I used to be able to play wmv files from websites simply by clicking on the
links - Windows Media Player 11 would launch and the video would play. Now
this doesn't happen - I get an error screen suggesting I'm not connected to
the Internet (when I am) or a white screen (on a framed site). The only way
I can play the wmv files is to right-click "save target as" and then
double-click the file on my hard drive. I haven't (knowingly) changed any
settings on my PC. Is this a Windows Update issue? How can I get my PC
back to behaving as I want it?
Running Vista Home Premium, IE7, WMP 11. No third party firewall. Kaspersky
AV 7.0 (which isn't causing the problem as it still happens when I disable
the AV).
