RE: Windows Media Player won't play DVDs

I had quite a few problems where DVDs would play audio and no video. I could
not see any video. When I first got the laptop DVD, MPEG, WMV, AVI all played
fine. BTW I have a Compaq Presario v3115tu model laptop.
I then went into the display properties utility and turned off the Video
Overlay feature by using Restore Defaults. This fixed it. It now works fine
and I can play DVD and MPEG files. I have no idea what caused this change but
it works now. I found some reference to WinDVD and "macrovision blocking when
when tv-out funtion activated". My laptop has the TV-out function. Here is

Here is the history of what happened as best as I can recall:
After about 3 months WMP (Windows Media Player) version 10 couldn't play:
1) MPEG video
2) WMV video
It could play AVI video.
I installed WMP 11 and that did not work.
I reduced the video acceleration in WMP and it got the WMV to play. (I
didn't have to do this before so I didn't know why this made sense).
The MPEG video and DVDs still did not play.
I installed Intervideo WinDVD and that did not work (this was recommended by
HP support) as they believed I did not have the correct codec. I also tried
HP DVD play and both of these did not work.
My laptop came with Muvee autoproducer (a movie making program supplied with
my laptop). DVD could play in this but it is not a suitable program for
watching DVDs. I also tried Windows Media Center and it also played the DVDs
but it is not suitable for watching DVDs.
I turned off the video acceleration in WMP 11 and it got the WMV back.
I installed the microsoft decoder check utility. It found the Cyberlink
Video/SP decoder clvsd.ax version 6.0.0.2717. It said this is the preferred
codec for WMP. I set it as the preferred codec. This didn't work.
I then went into the display properties utility and turned off the Video
Overlay feature by using Restore Defaults. This fixed it. It now works fine
and I can play DVD and MPEG files. I have no idea what caused this change but
it works now.
There was also a new driver on the compaq website that I could install but
this was for a fix for a video game problem so I did not bother.
I tried Windows Update to see if it would detect any new updates. It did not
detect anything else that I required (but it might). I went to the Compaq/HP
System health scan. It didn't tell me anything that would fix the problem but
I suppose it could for other problems.

lower my screen resolution or color settings. Unfortunately this does not
work.
I have purchased a DVD decoder from one of the links on the Microsoft site
and successfully installed it.
I have erased and re-installed my video adapter and monitor drivers to the
most recent versions.
I have installed independent DVD software and it gives a similar error
message to WMP.
I have a brand new computer with a 3.2GHZ processor, 1GB RAM, a video
adapter with 256 MB memory, etc. - all modern components.
Please help I am out of ideas. I just want to watch a DVD on Windows.
