ummm, how is AllOfMP3 a legit service?

It's legitimate because it's licensed in Russia. under Russian laws.

Typcial duck by an AllOfMP3.com customer.

As it happens I'm not. Check your assumptions, son.

When the recording industry sues you,
I'm sure you'll pack up your bags and move to Russia. BTW,
how do those Russian laws (and yourself while we're at it) distinguish
between the guys who run AllOfMP3 & private citizens with their own
P2P clients? All I need to do is install WinMX on my machine, and
send the Russian copyright authority a percentage of my sales ($0.00
USD), and I'll be entirely legit, just like AllOfMP3, right?

When the record companies pay artists a fair percentage, and reimburse
them for the years they spent earning nothing as an unknown artist,
I'll shed some tears. Poor, poor record companies who can't make an
honest buck because all these criminals are ripping them off.

CD sales in freefall beacause of this - no, wait, because the
companies play it safe and churn out mindless same-old drivel while
holding the radio stations hostage by controlling terms & conditions
of airplay (aka, free advertising for the actual physical product)

Flipside : Poor customers, sold the content once on vinyl, again on CD
and again on DRM diseased poor quality downloads for their mobile
device. I wonder why you give a toss about the record companies ? I
won't lose any sleep when independent music production and
distribution takes them down. Good riddance to em.

Well yes but those aren't licensed distributors.

LOL, you obviously have little concept of what the term "license"
means - just enough to satisfy your desire to get cheap music while
irrationally fending off fears that you might find one of those RIAA
complaints in your mailbox tomorrow. The idea behind a license is
that you have permission to do something from the person who has the
right to give you that license - the people who own it, or the
government authority that derives its power from those people. The
Russian government was never delegated that right by the owners of
that music, therefore their legislation is entirely irrelevant to the
issue of distinguishing between P2P and allofmp3. Allofmp3 does not
have a license that derives in any way from those with the legal right

Legalities change when you realise the US jurisdiction doesn't extend
beyond the western and eastern seaboards, no matter how much Bush and
his cronies (and you) might wish it to be otherwise. The US doesn't
own, or run the rest of the world and what's legal in some parts (eg
marrying your cousin) might be quite distasteful in other cultures.

The idea of a "License" is not a legal thing it's a cultural thing I'm
afraid

The fact that US copyright and IP laws don't apply worldwide is IMHO quite a blessing.

And what country are you writing from? And how do the laws of that
country apply to both AllOfMP3 & P2P users?

There's no legal precedent here for applying US law. In all sovreign
nations, laws are decided locally an not on the basis of an oligarchy
in the states.
