Sometimes it's worth looking at the detials of the error report which
will be sent to microsoft when it crashes. The initial details there
can help to identify which part of WMP is crashing.

Let's start at the beginning :

When you open WMP from the desktop icon, does it immediately crash,
and does it then go to "reporting a problem to microsoft" popup box ?

What happens if you find, say an MP3 audio file on your PC and double
click that to start WMP - does it start successfully then ?
