Re: drag and drop in tree view was the single most redeeming featu

Hi Bill,

I don't see that moving to a Mac would resolve the problem. It seems to me
the whole problem with Windows Media Player 11 is that it's gone more
Mac-like. That is, it's prettier, but it has less functionality. The whole
marketing ploy for Mac is to make them pretty, and people buy them on that
basis. However, as soon as you try to do anything off the mainstream with a
Mac (like, say, use drag and drop in the tree view in Windows Media Player)
you will find the options are limited. In fact, this is the very rational
behind why people say Macs are easier to use and are more reliable. They are
easier to use because you can't really do anything with them. They are more
reliable because there's no option to put them to task. For example, a Car
with no wheels is more reliable and easier to use, because you can't actually
do anything with it. It's safer too.

I have looked at Vista and I do like it. It is prettier, and on the surface,
there are less options to make it more Mac-like, however, you do have all the
options beneath the surface, if you know what it is you want to do.
Functionality has not been removed from Windows Vista, it's just been tucked
away a little. Unlike the Mac, where the functionality is not there in the
first place.

Darryl,

I have just installed WMP 11 and figured that I would have to tweak the
configuration to get the "tree" view back. I liked it because it was
consistent with OE Express and Windows Explorer views. You are telling me
that it is gone forever. I may just uninstall WMP 11 and go back to 10. I
have about a third of my CDs loaded in WMA format so I only have about 3K
songs but I also have about 500 vinyl LPs to go after that. The alphabetic
Library display is really useless. If this is a preview of the Vista
approach, I need to get a "M" word computer.

Thanks Zach, but I don't see any way at of of getting the "the same net effect
within the player" - as far as I can see, it's nothing less than awkward to
do numerous changes as you need to edit each track one at a time which is
fine for people who only have a few dozen songs but for a serious media
player to handle thousands of songs, it needs to be better - or at least as
good as it was in WMP10.

Beta one didn't have drag and drop working... that's my point and where your
comments/his review diverge. So "tree view is gone" I totally agree with,
"drag and drop in tree view" implies to me that tree view might still be
around. There are of course a number of ways to get the same net effect
within the player, but as noted, the non-scaling tree view is gone at this
point.

The released version has no tree view - therefore no drag and drop in the
tree view.

Actually, the problem is with the RTM version. I had hoped it would
have
been
fixed in RTM but it is not. Drag and drop in library tree view is not
available in the actual final release version. CNet's review is valid.

The guys reviewing beta *ONE*. Drag and drop should work fine in the
actual
final release version.

I think it's pretty nonsensical that CNet's review system treats beta
reviews as actual final product reviews. =\

I think that an astonishing deficiency with Windows Media Player 11
is
that
they removed the drag and drop functionality from the tag editor
library
view. I thought this was the single most redeeming feature of
Windows
Media
Player 10 and the one feature that made is a serious contender in
the
field.
Without that feature, it's really a useless music player\organizer
for
anyone
with a large music collection.

I really am at a loss to understand why Microsoft chose to remove
this
feature, but without it, I'd have to give Windows Media Player 11
two
thumbs
down.

" I used to drag and drop with in the library view to organize
everything.
Say you wanted to change the genre or add multiple genres. Before U
could
expand the genre tree and drag files over upon which U were prompted
to
add
or replace the genre. NO longer can U do this in WMP 11. Yes it can
be
done
via the tag editor, but it is not as clean. But where it really
becomes
a
pain is when you have files and go to find album info. You used to
be
able
to
drag files to an album that was incomplete in WMP 10, update and
boom
all
files would be associate with that album. No more, now U have to
stay
in
the
find info wizard and click over and over again on the album for each
track.

This is problematic, cause sometimes the wizard finds two separate
albums,
ie the UK version and the US version. This would split the album
across
two
album covers. And to fix that w/o drag and drop is a major pain."
