That particular bit is v10 advice...
Can Explorer still burn to it?

Ok, downloaded lattest version of WMP 11 several times over, but it
just won't see a blank CD in the drive when switching to burn. I
successfully burnt off using a competitors software, so I know
hardware and discs are fine. Can't seem to be able to reload
previous WMP software so I'm stuck with
the problem, any suggestions?
I have the same problem: can't burn with WMP11, it does not
recognise that a blank CD is inserted in the drive. The burner is
listed in devices and its drive letter is shown in blue in top right
of the burn pane. However, one thing I noticed on reading the MS
artcicle you link to
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;306319
is that where it says:
NOTE: To specify the hard disk where disk images are stored:
a. In Windows Media Player, click Options on the Tools menu.
b. Click the Devices tab, and then double-click the name of the
CD-R or CD-RW drive you are using.
c. Click the Recording tab, and then click a hard disk.
d. Click OK, and then click OK.
After doing steps a and b, I don't have a recording tab, only an
audio tab. That might be the root cause? If so what do I need to do?
I have run regsvr32 wmp.dll, no difference.
I've tried clicking on refresh in Tools options devices
The drive is running in Ultra DMA mode 2. There is a recording tab
on its properties, the box enable CD recording on this drive is
checked. I have tried setting write speed at different settings
Nothing helps. Just the message 'Insert a blank CD in drive E. Once
WMP detects the new disk it will automatically start burning'. If I
try to remove the blank disk I inserted earlier, the drive is
locked. If I click cancel, the drive opens when I close WMP.
XP SP2 all updates, IE 7 final. I have Roxio Easy Media Creator
Suite 9 and I can burn audio or data CDs or DVDs to that drive (my
only burner) without problems using that. None of the Roxio
components are set to start on boot, all Roxio services are on
manual and not started none of the EMC 9 components are running, so
EMC 9 is not interfering with WMP 11 access to the drive.
Quite a few people have posted on one or other of the newsgroups
with the same problem.
Problem fixed :-)
Yes, I could copy files to a blank CD using right click send to in Windows
Explorer. However when I did that I noticed that the files were being
written directly to the CD instead of the native XP 2 step method (create
the list, right click to write to CD). That made me think that Roxio drag to
disk must somehow be interfering, even though ostensibly not started.
Right clicking on the drive I saw an entry 'disable drag to disk for this
drive'. After clicking on that and saying yes to warning message, the
native XP method returned in Windows Explorer and WMP 11 recognised the
drive and the inserted blank CD and burned to the drive without problems.
Although drag to disk is installed as part of the Roxio EMC 9 package, I had
it set not to run on startup. I had not realised it highjacked the drive
even when not started.
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
