Hi there, I have never had a problem deleting devices from hardware manager
b4, b/c plug and play usually brings them back. While trouble-shooting a
sound card problem (worked, but not for a specific app) I deleted instead of
disabling the following device from Device Manger: Sound Video and Game
Controllers and no even though my sound cards are installed, windows does not
see a sound card and I can't select one from Control Panel > Sound Video and
Game as the default sound card for windows apps:

Deleted from Device Manager: WinMM WDM Audio (might have had a WMI in there
somewhere).

I've tried everything, including going to add new hardware and specifying
all manner of options. You can add just about any sound related device, but
not this one. I tried upgrading DirectX, upgrading/installing Windows Media
Player 10, and reinstalling service pack 2. Nothing worked. Please help!
I'm working on my brother's laptop he brought with him into town, but he left
his cd's/serial PID, etc at home.

Oops ! If you remember the model of the sound card, it's worth going
to the manufacturers website and looking for drivers - or try on
Windows Update and see if it can spot an update for your hardware
there.

Withouth the disks or manufacturer / model of the sound device it will
be a bit awkward to do, especially on a laptop where it's hard to just
pull the case and have a look.

You have my deepest sympathies - I guess you owe your brother a pint
when he gets back in town <g>

One thing worth trying is to use the Add New Hardware wizard, then
instead of automatic detection, tell it to search for drivers in a
location, then specify C:\Windows\System32 or C:\Windows, you probably
do still have the drivers on disk and just need the system to identify
them.
